Please join us for a stimulating talk with German Consul General Thomas H. Meister and Member of German Parliament, MdB Dagmar Freitag (SPD), also Chairperson of the Parliamentary Group USA, about the recent German elections on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at L’Alliance Française, 427 Lovett Boulevard, Houston, TX 77006.
After Germany’s elections, the conservatives (CDU/CSU) under Chancellor Merkel incurred their worst loss since 1949, but together are still the largest party coalition in the Bundestag. The second largest party, the Social Democrats (SPD), former coalition partner of the CDU, had its worst loss ever, and now becomes the leading opposition party. The right-wing, populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD), won an unprecedented 13% of votes, and also will be represented in the new Bundestag.
Germany – Was Nun?, Germany – What Now? It promises to be a most interesting evening. Check-in begins at 6:15 p.m. and the food and beverage reception starts at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be in English and start at 7:00 p.m. The fee of $10.00 for Houston-Leipzig members, of $15.00 for guests, and of $5.00 for students, contributes to the costs of our meetings.
