If you are German or of German heritage, you can conjure up the images evoked by the word Christkindlmarkt – immediately you smell the fennel and cinnamon, the eucalyptus, and the burnt almonds, and you can taste the Pfeffernuesse, the Printen, the Lebkuchen, and the Stolle.

Es waren wunderschoene Stunden – we all had such a wonderful time! There were over 80 of us; we filled almost the entire outdoor garden. We enjoyed great company, had wonderful conversations, tasted delicious food, listened to good Oktoberfest music . . . all that in perfect Houston October weather.

Surely you’ve noticed newlywed’s having their pictures made in Johannapark. You may have thought how lucky they were to have such a lovely backdrop for wedding photos so close to the Standesamt, but did you know there is another, much deeper and historical reason for shooting there?

Sunday, 13th August 1961, shortly after midnight. East German police disrupt the city train and underground connections. Street surfaces are ripped up, barbed wire barriers erected. The Soviet sector border in Berlin is sealed off from the western districts.
