Organ & Voice with Rick Erickson Opens Bach Society Season
The Bach Society Houston cordially invites you on Sunday, September 28, at 6:00 pm for the opening of the Bach Society season featuring new Director Rick Erickson in a new event called Organ & Voice. The performance will be in the format of a Vespers and includes a hymn, prayer, and plenty of organ music at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Boulevard, Houston, TX 77005. There will be no tickets needed for this event; a free-will offering will be accepted.
Rick Erickson (see also the earlier post on our website) will present several pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, including two movements from The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080, as well as organ music by Johann Krebs, Dieterich Buxtehude, and Georg Böhm.
A pre-concert lecture by Rick Erickson in the Parish Hall at 5:15 p.m. will precede the concert. In his talk he will illuminate the musical high lights of the concert, as well as the relationship among the pieces and their composers.
The third annual Leipzig Week at the Bach Society celebrates its relationship with the city of Leipzig through the Houston-Leipzig Sister City Association, and as an acknowledgment of the city where JS Bach worked as cantor at the St. Thomas Church, and where he wrote much of his most memorable music.
A reception honoring Rick Erickson and generously sponsored by Prego’s Italian Restaurant in the Village, follows the concert. Come and welcome him to his new post as Director of the Bach Society Houston.
As part of the celebration of Leipzig Week, the Bach Society Houston also welcomes five students from Leipzig’s Conservatory for Music and Theater Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. They will present a chamber music concert on Thursday, October 2, at Christ the King Lutheran Church at 7:30 pm. The students from the Conservatory are known for performances full of youthful brio and a display of skill beyond their years.
The Sequoia String Quartet, consisting of Kivanç Tire, violin; Sabina Curti, violin; Augusta Romaskeviciute, viola; and Katharina Litschig, violoncello (in a repeat performance from last fall). Pianist Jin Hee Kim will join them to make a quintet. They will play selections from the works of Schubert, Schumann, and Shostakovich.
