Christ the King Lutheran Church welcomes Senior Pastor Britta Taddiken of St Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, during the first week of October. Pastor Taddiken will preach at the morning services on October 6 at 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. and give the homily at Bach Vespers at 6:00 p.m.  St. Thomas congregation council member Dr. Matthias Schwarz will lead Sunday Forum at 9:45 a.m. with a Q&A on the particular challenges of congregational life at St Thomas. St Thomas in Leipzig is an interna­tional pilgrimage site for admirers of Johann Sebastian Bach who served as its cantor and director of the famous boy choir for the last 27 years of his life. The pastors, members, and friends of Christ the King are thrilled for this opportu­nity to deepen the covenant relationship between the two congregations.

6:00 p.m. Bach Vespers for the Sister Cities!

The Bach Society Houston opening Vespers celebrate the”Sister City” relationship with Leip­zig, Germany, as well as the partner relationship between Christ the King Lutheran, Houston, and St. Thomas, Leipzig.

Britta Taddiken, Pastor of St. Thomas, will give the homily. The Bach Choir and orchestra will present BWV 67 “Halt im Gedachtnis, Jesum Christ,” as well as motets by Praetorius and Erickson, to add to the joyful congre­gational singing and great organ music! All are welcome!

In honor of the ongoing cultural exchanges between Houston and Leipzig, October’s podcast guest is Dr. Tanya Kevorkian, Associate Professor of History at Millersville University. We’ll hear from her about her book Baroque Piety: Religion, Society, and Music in Leipzig, 1650–1750. Kevorkian’s research focuses on the social history of Baroque music, the social history of religion in early modern Germany, and colonial Pennsylvania history. Her latest book, Music and Urban Life in Baroque Germany, is forthcoming from the University of Virginia Press.
