Movie Night with beer tasting at Houston-Leipzig

The Story of German Beer (2016) – a documentary by Jens Niehuss

Do join us for our next meeting, on Thursday, August 8, 2019, 6:30 p.m., at L’Alliance Française, 427 Lovett Boulevard, Houston, TX  77006 (please note parking restrictions below), for a tasting of a flight of German beers along with a most interesting film about the making and history of German beer, from the Sumerians through the Middle Ages to the latest trends.

Watch a short trailer from the movie here:  https://vimeo.com/214069841

Board member Dr. Joerg and Diana Meyer, and member Ted Dohnen and wife Sheila Noeth were hard at work to find great movies for the summer.  They’ve done a marvellous job, and this last one is a lot of  fun!

Water, hops and malt – the ingredients of Germany’s favorite beverage haven’t changed in over 500 years. German beer – or “Gerstensaft” (barley juice), as it is also called,  remains popular in Germany and around the world.

From 12 to 20 types of beer in ancient times to today’s over 5,000 types in Germany alone, humans have probably enjoyed beer ever since they started eating grains, with the oldest known recipe dating back to the time of the Sumerians 5,000 years ago. The Story of German Beer portrays the development of beer, which probably started as fermented bread dough and over time developed into the drink we know today.  While we enjoy the brew, we’ll also hear interesting tidbits about brewing, delivering, bottling, and probably consuming it.

It also sheds light on why Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (whose ancestors created the first beer specifications over 500 years ago – the Reinheitsgebot and would be King of Bavaria if Germany were still a monarchy) brews probably the best beer in Bavaria, and how large enterprises were already emerging around 1900, making a profitable business out of quenching the thirst of the masses – it’s a great story!

Are you thirsty yet?  Come out and join us for a fun night with and about Germany’s favorite beverage.  Of course, we will also have water and that other favorite adult beverage at the meeting.
