THEREMIN FANTASIES
This Friday and Saturday the Apollo Chamber Players host THEREMIN FANTASIES, exploring the unique sound-world of the theremin, an electronic instrument played without physical contact by the performer. Leipzig-based theremin superstar Carolina Eyck joins Apollo for her first ever concert in the Bayou City, with an arresting theremin-featuring septet by Czech composer Martinů and new works by Ms. Eyck.
She has given concerts worldwide and collaborated with Heinz Holliger, Robert Kolinsky, Gerhard Oppitz, the conductors Andrey Boreyko, Michael Sanderling, Gürer Aykal and John Storgårds, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg , the HR-Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, the Heidelberg Symphonic Orchestra and ACME, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble as a soloist and chamber musician.
Matthew J. Detrick, Artistic and Executive Director of the Apollo chamber players, notes that her “mastery of this singular instrument transcends the technical wizardry required to play it well – the theremin is an extension of her inner voice and soul. You will hear this intimateness in her solo compositions along with a unique virtuosity displayed in the chamber works. The ‘eerie’ sound so long associated with the theremin is transformed by Carolina’s expressive gestures and [the Apollo Chamber Players’] collective musicality.”
In addition to Ms. Eyck, the Apollo Chamber Players welcome two world-class artists with Houston roots: HSPVA graduate Elizabeth Priestly Siffert who is Principal Oboe of the Houston Grand Opera and Ballet Orchestras and plays concerts across the U.S., as well as Alejandro Barrañon, Professor of Piano at University of Zacatecas who earned his doctorate at UH Moores School of Music.
