The Bach Society Houston is proud to present John Scott, Organist and Director of Music at St. Thomas Church in Manhattan, at the October 26, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice boulevard, Houston, TX 77005. He will delight listeners with selections from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Clavier-Übung III.
John Scott has been described as “One of the world’s leading organists . . . technical brilliance and solid musicianship” (The American Organist) and the “premier English organist of his generation . . . in a class of his own” (Manchester Evening News, England).
John Scott was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, where he was a Cathedral chorister. In 1974 he became Organ Scholar of St. John’s College, Cambridge. In his debut at the 1977 Promenade Concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, he played Reubke’s Sonata on the 94th Psalm. He was the youngest organist to appear as a soloist in the Proms. In 1985 he was appointed Sub-Organist of St Paul’s Cathedral (London), and became its Organist and Director of Music in 1990 and served until 2004.
In the summer of 2004, after a 26 year association with St Paul’s Cathedral, he took up the post of Organist and Director of Music at St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, where he now directs the renowned Choir of Men and Boys. In the New Years Honours List of 2004, he was awarded the LVO (Lieutenant in the Royal Victorian Order), a personal gift from HM Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition of his work at St Paul’s Cathedral. An honorary doctorate from Nashotah House Seminary in Wisconsin followed in 2007.
Bach Society Director Rick Erickson will give a pre-concert lecture at 5:15pm in the Parish Hall.
