Our May meeting is coming up in our regular venue next Thursday, May 15, 2014, in the Parish Hall at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Previously I had already indicated that we will deal with money matters.
The timing is perfect. Are you familiar with Thomas Piketty’s “Capital”? Just published in English about two months ago, it is already the talk of the town. The German political magazine “Der Spiegel” made it this week’s title story under the headline “The Prosperity Lie” and the subtitle “From the Impossibility of Becoming Rich with Work.” Sounds interesting, right?
At the same time brand-new financial instruments are hitting the market big time: “Coco-Bonds”. You may already know that these are “Contingent Convertible Bonds” – very explanatory, right? Does the cheating start again?
Dr. John Hund, international finance and economics professor from Rice University with an impressive CV both in the banking and academic world, as well as think tanks (please check out Dr. Hund’s CV here), will give us the scoop with his talk:
“Looking-glass Economics: The Vices of Saving and Wealth”
We will have an evening of listening, learning and debating. I promise, it will not be boring. It is impossible to stop listing when Dr. Hund explains what happens in the background (I call it underground) and why the little guy ALWAYS pays the bill.
Do not miss this opportunity to inform yourself. Do join us on Thursday, May 15. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. we will have our customary food and beverage reception, and the meeting and presentation begin at 7:00 p.m. Meeting fees are $10 for members, $5 for students, and $15 for nonmembers. Ample parking is available on the Rice University parking lot off Greenbriar for $1, credit card only.
Please respond here or to angelika@houstonleipzig.org as soon as possible, so that we may plan properly for the reception.
Have a great weekend, and I look forward to seeing you on Thursday
Sincerely,
Wolfgang Schmidt
