The St. Thomas Boys Choir, whose history dates back to the year 1212, is the oldest cultural establishment of the city of Leipzig. Outliving all political, municipal, religious, and educational controversy, 800 years musica sacra has shaped the choir’s past.

Through the influence of the many St. Thomas cantors, including the most famous – Johann Sebastian Bach (Thomas Cantor 1723-1750) – the City of Leipzig and the St. Thomas Church became the center of Protestant church music. The St. Thomas Church is home to the boys’ choir.  A choir rich in tradition, they are committed to continue his musical legacy.  http://www.thomaskirche.org/r-st-thomas-boys-choir.html

Founded in 1995, the Leipzig Baroque Orchestra has become renowned for its interpretation of music from the 17th and 18th century.  They regularly accompany the choir in performances of its cantatas, Christmas oratories, and passions of the evangelists.  http://www.leipzigerbarockorchester.de/

We have more visitors from Leipzig: a Buergerreise/citizens’ delegation of about 28 persons will arrive this week and stay for about ten days to meet the people of Houston, experience the sights and sounds of the city, and soak up as much Texana as possible; an economic delegation will make contacts and meet counterparts of the various businesses represented; and the Mayor of Leipzig Burkhard Jung will fly in to personally present the choir to Houstonians, before continuing on with it to its other American engagements.

We cordially invite you to meet the Mayor, his entourage, and the delegations on Sunday, November 10 at 2:30 p.m. at Inman Gallery, where five Leipzig artists (Kerber, von Lebusa, Leciejewski, Plogsties, and Rochhausen) are currently exhibiting “Lokalkolorit” (Local Color). The gallery is located at 3901 Main Street, Houston, Texas. Gallery owner Kerry Inman will also be present.

Enjoy the week, and we hope to see you soon.
