Aaron Kaufman

The Houston-Leipzig Sister City Association is delighted to present Aaron Kaufman  – Singer, Songwriter, Artist Extraordinaire –on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall of Christ the King Lutheran Church.  He just returned from Leipzig where they loved him, raved about his music, and where he created “a musical experience guaranteed to leave listeners wanting more.”  The early-twenty-something singer-songwriter will perform his trademark jazzy-folk-pop that vowed his audiences there last month.  He “skillfully [weaves] together wistful lyrics and memorable melodies,” they said, and talked about his “up-tempo . . . stirring vocals . . . and . . . groove-y acoustic guitar.” In Leipzig at the same time as the three high school exchange students from Houston, he occasionally joined them in their outings.  Take a look here at the post about his first performance  in Leipzig.

His performances have drawn national attention, and In 2008, the BMI  Foundation awarded Kaufman a coveted John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship; he also won an “NPR Whad’Ya Know” competition, compared to “American Idol but for public radio . . . sort of.”

Since he’s been in Texas, the Connecticut native has become an important part of the Purple Songs Can Fly project at Texas Children’s Hospital, helping cancer-stricken children write and perform their own songs at the hospital’s recording studio.  Last March he played at the prestigious SXSW Festival in Austin.

He writes and composes new songs whenever inspiration strikes.  Click here for a free download of Kaufman’s recently released EP Hello,Dear.  You can listen to it here:

While he was in Leipzig he was intrigued by the acoustics of a stairwell, and spontaneously conceived of a series of videos called Songs In Simple Places, where he will make live recordings of small intimate performances in everyday, non-traditional performance spaces.  Here’s the first video in the series:

He often teams up with Tricia Fox to perform as the folk band Edmund Evans.

Please send your RSVP now to Angelika either on facebook or by email, and while you’re on the Houston-Leipzig facebook page, please do click on the thumbs-up “like” button – it’s important.

On Thursday, August 18, 2011, registration will begin at 6:15 p.m., our customary refreshments reception will be at 6:30 p.m., and the performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $10, $5 for students.  Parking is available on the Rice University Stadium lot off Greenbriar at Entrance 13B.
