Our friends in the film division of the Museum of Fine Arts are excited about the special screening of Wings of Desire this Monday, November 7, 2011, at 7:00 p.m.

Most people in Texas know Wim Wenders for his movie Paris, Texas; indeed it is the first movie shown at the Wim Wenders Retrospective at American Cinematheque in Los Angeles next week.  Closely following in that retrospective, however,  is Wings of Desire, a movie that has been called “a European art film that could be all things to all people and “one of the best movies you can see (Washington Post).”  Wings has been highly lauded and won many awards, including Best Director at Cannes in 1987.

A soulful trapeze artist who wears artificial wings to soar to heaven like an angel, and an angel with real wings who falls in love with her and longs simply to be a human, a postwar Berlin torn into East and West, a script by Peter Handke, and the lens and vision of Wim Wenders – all come together for this gem of a film.  Curiously enough, included in his vision is Peter Falk, whose pivotal role as an “ex-angel” anchors the vision.  Watch a clip here and read Wenders’ discussion of why only Peter Falk would do for his film.

Mary Lampe, Executive Director of the Southwest Alternative Media Program , will introduce the film.  As part of her duties at SWAMP, Lampe organized and hosted the newly revived statewide Texas Media Arts Conference in October 2001. She is a regular participant in festivals statewide as a speaker and juror and serves as the Co-Executive Producer of THE TERRITORY, a series of 13 half-hour programs of short independent film, video and new media works that is aired on PBS stations throughout Texas.

Wim Winders’ latest film PINA, a documentary about the legendary dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch with her ensemble Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, recently received the German Arthouse-Cinema-Prize – the Gilde Film Prize 2011 – in Leipzig for Best Documentary during the Filmkunst Messe at the Altes Landratsamt.

This Monday evening at the Museum of Fine Arts, a lucky audience members will win a pair of tickets to Wim Wenders’s new 3-D film, PINA screening as part of the Cinema Arts Festival Houston, November 9-13!”
