Schumann notesOn April 9, graduate students of Dr. Stephen King at the Shephard School of Music at Rice University are performing  Auf Flügeln des Gesanges, a Liederabend  to honor their retiring friend and teacher Kathleen Kaun.  Marcus DeLoach, a great baritone currently engaged in doctoral studies at the Shepherd School is helping organize the event.  He has written an arrangement for it, and also will be singing a couple songs at the concert.

Robert Schumann’s Spanisches Liederspiel makes up the first half of the evening.  For those of you not familiar, it’s a wonderful Spanish influenced multi-songed collection with gorgeous, quartets, duets, and solo songs.  The second half is a mixed bag of hits from the German Lieder repertoire, several with violin obligato.

The singers are: Kelley Kimball, Allegra De Vita, Rafael Moras, Joe Eletto, Calvin Griffin, Rachel Sigman, Katya Gruzglina, Frederick Ballentine, Nicholas Brownlee, Joe Eletto, Dr. King, and Marcus DeLoach. They will be joined by Kyung-A Yoo, piano and Eric Thomas Graz, violin.

They hope you’ll consider joining them if you’re available that night.  The concert is free and the music is choice!
