The fascinating discourse of Dr. Klaus Weissenberger about Stefan Zweig at our last meeting, and a suggestion from one of our board members, prompted us to present to you Brainwashed, a film of Stefan Zweig’s last, posthumously published fiction, Schachnovelle, often called The Royal Game. We cordially invite you to our membership meeting on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 6:30 p.m.

The movie has been described as a fascinating psychological drama, starring Curd Juergens (The Devil’s General, the Enemy Below, the Battle of Britain) as Werner von Basil, and Austrian aristocrat captured by the Nazis during their takeover and thrown into solitary confinement.  Once there, he is manipulated and interrogated in an effort to force him to reveal secret military information vital to his captors.  Struggling to keep his sanity, he fights back with the only means available to him – a book on chess hidden in this cell.

This stylish and visually stunning movie also stars Claire Bloom (Alexander the Great, Clash of the Titans) and is directed by Gerd Oswald.  The movie is in German with English subtitles.

We will begin the evening with our customary food and beverage reception in the Parish Hall, the program starts at 7:00 p.m.  Parking is available at the Rice University parking lot off Greenbriar across the street from the church.  Meeting fees are $15 for nonmembers, $10 for members, and $5 for students.

Registration will start at 6:15 p.m.  Please RSVP to angelika@houstonleipzig.org now, so that we can plan properly for the reception.  We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday evening.
