Germany has taken in more than 1,000,000 asylum seekers and fugitives, and we are all wondering how it is going to work out.  Will they assimilate?  Will they take us over?  Do join us on Thursday, August 9, 6:30 p.m. at L’Alliance Française, 427 Lovett, Houston, TX  77006 (please note parking restrictions below) to see how the Hartmann family  manages it in Willkommen bei den Hartmanns, a delightful film comedy by German director Simon Verhoeven (English with German subtitles).

Simon Verhoeven:  Willkommen bei den Hartmanns

Recently retired teacher Angelika decides, against her skeptical husband Richard’s will, to take in a refugee. Soon afterward, the young Nigerian Diallo moves into the Hartmann home, and a whirlwind of complications ensue. These events not only disrupt the lives of Angelika and Richard’s adult children Philip and Sophie; they also put their own marriage as well as Diallo’s chances of integration to the test. Along the way, everybody gets in the act:  helpers, Nazis, fugitives, right wingers, left wingers, etc.  Despite all the chaos, hope prevails that the family will recover its stability, confidence, and peace – like the rest of Germany.

Lauded as a German comedy with a most modern topic,  Willkommen bei den Hartmanns brings out laugh after laugh.  The film was declared the best German comedy of 2016.
