It’s too hot outside – come and watch a delightful satiric comedy (comedic satire?) with us! It’s almost time for Houston-Leipzig’s July movie night, and we cordially invite you to join us for Billy Wilder’s Cold War classic comedy One, Two, Three (1961) on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at L’Alliance Française, 427 Lovett Boulevard, Houston, TX 77006 (please note parking restrictions below). This film was chosen by popular demand.
Billy Wilder: One, Two, Three
Billy Wilder, Austrian-born and raised, was a phenomenally successful American movie director and producer. His credits include blockbusters Sunset Boulevard, Some Like it Hot, Double Indemnity, The Apartment, The 7-Year Itch, Lost Weekend, Witness for the Prosecution, etc.
Wilder was shooting One, Two, Three in Berlin on the day the Wall went up, and he had to move production to Bavaria. The movie features German stars Horst Buchholz, Lilo Pulver, and American comedian James Cagney. André Previn, also German-born (Berlin), wrote the score; Previn was conductor of the Houston Symphony from 1967 – 1969.
The film was banned in Finland from 1962 to 1986 on “political” grounds — it was feared that the film would harm relations between Finland and the Soviet Union. United Pictures Finland tried to get the film released theatrically in 1962, 1966 and 1969 but it was only in 1986 that the Finnish Board of Film Classification allowed the film to be distributed.

James Cagney gives one of the richest, funniest, most breathlessly paced performances of his career (The New York Times) in this Billy Wilder comedy that defrosts the Cold War with gales of laughter! C. R. MacNamara (Cagney), a top-ranking executive stationed in West Berlin, is charged with the care of his boss’ visiting daughter. But when he learns that she’s gone and married a fierce young communist and that his boss will be arriving in town in 24 hours, Mac must transform the unwilling beatnik into a suitable son-in-law or risk losing his chance for advancement! Before you can say one, two, three, his plans have spun out of control and into an international incident that could infuriate the Russians, the Germans and, worst of all, his own suspicious wife (Arlene Francis)!
Logistics for Houston-Leipzig Movie Night: One, Two, Three
Check-in begins at 6:15 p.m., the food and beverage reception at 6:30 p.m. The meeting and movie will start at 7:00 p.m. The fee of $10.00 for Houston-Leipzig members, of $15.00 for guests, and of $5.00 for students, contributes to the program costs and meeting space rental.

Important Parking Information
Parking is limited on Lovett Boulevard – please observe all parking restrictions. Do not park across the street from L’Alliance Française (Lovett Boulevard between Whitney and Taft Streets). If you park there after 6:00 p.m. you will first receive an expensive ticket, and shortly thereafter, your car will be towed. There is plenty of parking on the side streets.
