Postcards from the TrenchesIf you missed the WWI centennial exhibition, Postcards from the Trenches: Germans and Americans Visualize the Great War that we visited last October, here is your chance:  the exhibit has been extended to February 21, 2015. Thereafter, everything will be packed up and the exhibit will travel to Germany. Before the exhibition closes, there are three events scheduled that you might like to attend.

Drew Cameron, director of Combat Paper Project (San Francisco) and a veteran of the Iraq War, will give a talk at the museum about working with veterans and their communities to transform uniforms worn in service into pulp and paper and then into art, poetry, and prose. Here are the details:

Combat Paper in a Time of War

In Director Cameron’s own words: “Coming home from war is a difficult thing. There is often much to account for as a survivor. A new language must be developed in order to express the magnitude and variety of the collective effect. Hand papermaking is the language of Combat Paper. By working in communities directly affected by warfare and using the uniforms and artifacts from their experiences, a transformation occurs and a collective language is born.”

If you’re interested in learning more about the Combat Paper Project’s work with veterans and communities (and other artists), please visit the project’s website at http://www.combatpaper.org/about.html.  The art produced by veterans and civilians, with the help of the Combat Paper Peace Project, is remarkable.

Along with his talk at The Printing Museum on Friday, February 13, at 6:30 pm, Director Cameron will also direct a public hands-on workshop at the museum all day Saturday, February 14, 2015, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The closing event on February 21, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, includes wine, a public tour of the exhibit during which the curator Dr. Irene Guenther will talk about some of the background stories associated with the postcards and the artworks on display, and a performance by the Damenchor of the Houston Saengerbund.
