Prof. Christoph Wolff

Prof. Christoph Wolff

Our organization is underwriting the Houston Seminar lecture by Prof. Christoph Wolff, the world’s leading Bach scholar. The lecture will be at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Thursday, February 6, 7 – 8:30 p.m. His talk will be the climactic event in a series sponsored by the nonprofit Houston Seminar in anticipation of the upcoming Houston Early Music Festival (February 8 – 16).

Dr. Wolff will speak on “Defining Bach the Composer: What the Brandenburg Concertos and B-Minor Mass Have in Common” and how both reveal Bach’s gifts and goals.  His lecture points toward Mercury’s February 14 performance of the Brandenburg Concertos (Wortham Center, Stude Hall), and the Bach Society Houston’s February 16 performance of the mass with Peter Kopp, guest conductor (Hobby Center, Zilkha Hall).

Register in advance at http://houstonseminar.org/index.php/registration/ or call 713-666-9000. Members of Christ the King Church and festival ticket holders are eligible for a discounted price of $15/lecture (limited availability; regular admission $25, students $10).

The Houston Early Music Festival (February 8 – 18) is a collaboration of four leading early-music organizations in Houston:  Ars Lyrica Houston, Bach Society Houston, Houston Early Music, and Mercury–The Orchestra Redefined, all of which will present concerts during the festival. Details are at www.houstonearlymusicfestival.org .  If you missed the Houston Chronicle cover story in Zest by Steven Brown Early Music Finds A Home in Houston this past Sunday, check it out now; it also lists a complete program schedule for the festival.

Of particular interest may be Bach’s Eighteen Leipzig Chorales, featuring German organ artists Stefan Bleicher and  Mario Hospach-Martini (Trossingen, Germany), on February 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church.  Admission is free.

We hope to see you on Thursday!
