Remember when you were a kid and Memorial Day weekend was the beginning of summer – a leisurely time that stretched ahead endlessly with promises of swimming and biking, lemonade and hot dogs, picnics in the park or in the backyard, smells of suntan lotion, sand between your toes, building real sandcastles and castles in your mind . . .

We do hope that you find some relaxation with family and friends this weekend, and if stormy weather keeps you from the outdoors, there’s plenty to do.

The avid soccer fans among you will have already planned your Saturday around the European Champions League soccer final – one that pits two German teams against each other – showing at Bar Munich in Midtown Houston at 1:45 p.m.  Get there early, as seating is on a “first-come, first-serve” basis; they are serving a special menu by Saussibun for the sausage lover, including the famous Currywurst, and German beer galore.

On Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, the Bach Society Houston concludes its spectacular season with Chamber Music: Virtuoso Violin Music from the Dresden Court, featuring composers from that magnificent court; it is truly “a concert worthy to be heard by Dresden royalty.”  Violinist Yung-Hsiang Wang is joined by Matthew Dirst, harpsichord; Richard Savino, harpsichord; and Barrett Sills, violoncello. Tickets are available online or at the door. Seating is limited, and advance purchase is recommended.

During the weekend of June 8 and 9 Christ the King Lutheran Church welcomes Dr. MargotKäßmann to preach and speak during the services.  There will be a special luncheon on Sunday by reservation only.  For more information, check out the Houston-Leipzig website.  The Rev. Dr. Käßmann is Ambassdor of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) for the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation in 2017.  Dr. Käßmann is a popular author, speaker, and media spokesperson in Germany.  She is the former Chairwoman of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany and Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hannover.

Join the Texas Music Festival at Moores School of Music at the University of Houston in celebration of its 24th season featuring classical music’s rising stars in performance throughout the month of June.  Each year, the Texas Music Festival hosts the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artist Competition, a concerto competition in which the winner is invited to appear as a soloist with the Akademisches Orchester in Leipzig, Germany, at the famous Gewandhaus in the summer of 2013.  Join them for a local performance with the concerto competition winner on Saturday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m.  After the performance, you are invited to come backstage and personally meet the soloist.  For more details take a look at our Houston-Leipzig website.

And last, but not least, mark your calendars for two important Houston-Leipzig dates:  on September 21, 2013, Houston-Leipzig celebrates its 20th anniversary with a dinner at the Junior League, and the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir from Leipzig performs on November 9 and November 10 at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

Have a great weekend,

Angelika
