What a busy month May is already turning out to be!  The OTC brought more than 104,000 visitors to Houston this past week, topping the record set during the boom times of the early 1980s.  Even though most of these visitors have left town, the parties and events continue.

First of all, be sure to join us on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at 6:30 p.m., in the Parish Hall of Christ the King Lutheran Church, when Dr. Volker Eisele examines how artists dealt with the repressive system of communism and how politics influenced the artists and their art in  Leipziger Schule – Fact or Fiction?  We will have our customary food and beverage reception at 6:30 p.m.; the program starts at 7:00 p.m.  For more details on the program and our speaker, check out our website .

The Bach Society Houston presents works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Michael Praetorius, and Heinrich Schuetz, at the last of the Bach Vespers series this Sunday, May 12, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, with the Bach Choir Houston and Mercury Baroque.  At a pre-concert lecture at 5:15 p.m., Dr. Matthew Dirst discusses the works being performed that evening.  Please find more information on the Bach Society Houston’s website or at our Houston-Leipzig website.

The Moores School of Music Concert Chorale will perform a freeMarktoberdorf Send-Off Concert on Tuesday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Moores Opera Center.  The concert is a preview of works prepared for the 13th annual International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany, a competition that has been held every two years since 1989.  For more information on the chorale and the competi tion, take a look at the blog on our website.  To reach the University of Houston from I-45 southbound, take the Cullen exit. From I-45 northbound take the Elgin/Cullen/Lockwood exit. Use UH Entrance 16, off Cullen to reach the Moores School of Music building and the Moores Opera House. 

German Consul General Klaus-Jochen Guehlcke and Italian Consul General Fabrizio Nava cordially invite you to the free screening of the film “Solino on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Rice Media Center on the Rice University Campus.  The award-winning movie was dire cted by Fatih Akin, the director who brought us the film In July/Im Juli last summer.  For more detailed information about the film, please check the blog on our website.

For those of you who will be downtown at noon on Thursday, May 16, stop by the Houston Visitors Center in City Hall, 901 Bagby, for a Learn-at-Lunch series, featuring China:  Explore Beijing Opera.  Guest speaker will be Mr. Zhou Xinlai , Beijing Opera Master from the Houston Chinese community, with support  from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China.  A light lunch will be provided; seating is limited, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  The event is free and open to the public.  For more information call 832-393-0700 or check out our blog.
