hamburg-framed_98_70On Sunday, February 17, 2013, at 6:00 p.m., the Bach Choir Houston and Mercury Baroque perform in Bach Vespers at Christ the King Lutheran Church.  This Sunday’s program features music from the city of Hamburg, which had a lasting impact on Bach from the time of his first visit there as a fifteen year old student. The centerpiece of the program is Bach’s cantata Erhöhtes Fleisch und Blut, BWV 173 (first performed 1724 in Leipzig). Two contrasting works by Hamburg composers round out the program: Cantate Domino canticum novum by Hieronymus Praetorius (1607) and Johannes Brahms’ setting of Psalm 13 (1859) for women’s chorus, strings and organ. The Bach Choir Houston and Mercury are joined by singers from the Sam Houston State University Chorale.

A pre-concert lecture (at 5:15pm) by musicologist Dr. Carrie Allen Tipton will offer insight into the origins of this particular Bach cantata in the baroque dance suite.

There is no admission charge for either event; a free-will offering will be accepted.  The church is located at 2353 Rice Boulevard, Houston, TX  77005.
