Houston at NightFor this our Houston-Leipzig 20th anniversary year, our President Ute Eisele has planned a cornucopia of events that is sure to include something for everyone.  While our regular monthly meetings are usually on the 3rd Thursday of the month, this year we are happy to change our schedule occasionally to accommodate special visitors from Leipzig.

This month the McClain Gallery celebrated visiting artists Rosa Loy and Neo Rauch; in April the Bach Society Houston features the Amarcord Ensemble in its Abendmusik Concert; musicians and ensembles will delight us again for the Leipziger Woche  under the auspices of Albert LeDoux in September; and it all culminates with two performances by the Thomanerchor (St. Thomas Boys Choir), and a delegation from Leipzig led by the Honorable Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig, in November.  Be sure to stay tuned to our website and especially the Event Calendar where we have mapped out the entire year 2013, including the schedule of the Bach Society Houston.

Our next member meeting is on February 21 with an exciting program, The Ultimate Space Odyssey; we’ll update you on this event later.  On March 21, mezzo soprano Sonja Bruzauskas and Dr. Morgulis on the piano entertain us with Ein Abendlied: Robert Schumann and commentary by Dr. Bailey.  On April 11, we’ll enjoy a presentation on the resurrection of the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin – Phoenix from the Asheswith former Consul General of Germany and Houston-Leipzig member Klaus Aurisch and artist Magda Boltz-Wilson.

On March 1 and 2, the Houston Symphony presents Wozzeck in Concert, Alban Berg’s opera of “social criticism, lust, murder and morality” in a concert version.  For more details, please click here.  To better acquaint audiences more with this masterwork, the Houston Symphony is partnering with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston for a showing of Joachim Hess’ 1972 film version of the opera in a Sneak Preview “Wozzeck”.  MFAH Curator and Houston-Leipzig board member Helga Aurisch introduces the film by briefly placing it in the context of the Expressionist movement in the visual arts.  The event at the museum is free, but you must have a ticket for admissionPlease click here for more details.

Enjoy our wonderful weather and remember to keep checking the Events Page.
