Dear Members and Friends of Houston-Leipzig,

We have so much in store for you that it’s hard to know where to begin.  Of course, first please do let us know whether you’ll be attending our Leipziger Allerlei or Houston Meets Leipzig this Thursday, January 17, 2013, by sending an email to angelika@houstonleipzig.org .  Thank you to all of you who have already responded.  Please see details for our Houston-Leipzig meeting on our website by clicking here.

Just to catch you up on a couple of past items.  Wolfgang Zimmermann, First Vice President of our sister organization the Staedtepartnerschaft Leipzig-Houston e.V., successfully ran the Aramco Half-Marathon on Sunday in quite awful weather!  Joining him in the Chevron Marathon were our Houston-Leipzig President Ute Eisele, and our friends Matthias Henze, Mitja Heinemann, Brad Fuerst, and Andrew Holland.  Congratulations to all the intrepid athletes.  If you ran in either marathon, please let us know, and we’ll add your name to the post.

The best news of all is that Dr. Robert Moore, a two-time President of Houston-Leipzig and board member, was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Order of Merit) of the Federal Republic of Germany. Consul General Klaus-Jochen Gϋhlcke made the presentation in the name of the German Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck in the Parish Hall of Christ the King Lutheran Church on January 14, 2013.  Click here for a link to the announcement on the pages of the official City of Leipzig website, and click here to see an article in today’s Leipziger Volkszeitung, the Leipzig daily newspaper. We will have a post on our website and more pictures shortly.

The German American Chamber of Commerce in the Southern United States (Houston) cordially invites you to its New Year’s Reception on Thursday, January 24, 2013, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the German Language Center.  “As the New Year begins and the old one ends, we invite you to celebrate with us!“  Enjoy Champagne & Hors d’oeuvres from Charivari & Epicure Café and help support the German Language Center by participating in a silent auction!  Click here for more details and registration information.

Later in the month, Leipzig has a treat for all art lovers.  On Thursday, January 24, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., McClain Gallery is pleased to present the first exhibition of German artist Rosa Loy in the South.  Loy is associated with a contemporary German painting movement loosely referred to as the New Leipzig School, and as one of the few women members of the group, her dream-like narratives express an intimate point of view. Her solo show, titled Souvenir, includes a selection of recent paintings and new works on paper.  Her husband Neo Rauch is often referred to as the principal artist of the New Leipzig School.  All friends and members of Houston-Leipzig are cordially invited to the opening reception.  Click here for more information.

On Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. the Museum of Fine Arts Director Gary Tinterow moderates an informal conversation with German artists Rosa Loy and Neo Rauch at the Freed Auditorium at the Glassell School of Art.  Our Houston-Leipzig President Ute Eisele and her husband gallery owner Volker Eisele will translate.  Admission to this program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. More information will be available on our Houston-Leipzig website shortly.

On March 1-2, 2013, the Houston Symphony will perform Alban Berg’s masterwork opera Wozzeck at Jones Hall.  In conjunction with these performance, the MFAH presents Joachim Hess’s 1972 film version of the opera, starring Toni Blankenheim for a sneak preview.  Houston-Leipzig board member Helga K. Aurisch, MFAH curator of European art, introduces the film by briefly placing it in the context of the Expressionist movement in the visual arts. Click here for the time and date; additional information will be on our Houston-Leipzig website soon.

We’ll see you Thursday, please do RSVP, and enjoy life!
