Vom 24.6.-8.7. hatte Leipzig Besuch aus seiner texanischen Partnerstadt Houston. Seit bereits 13 Jahren besteht diese Freundschaft und dank des alljährlich veranstalteten Schülerwettbewerbs an einem Leipziger Gymnasium sowie einer Schule in Houston durften die texanischen Gewinner nun ihre Partnerstadt während eines zweiwöchigen Besuchs persönlich kennenlernen. Begleitet wurden Jenny, Randy und Eric von den deutschen Gewinnern und gleichzeitigen Gastfamilien. Des Weiteren nahm der beliebte US-Folk-Jazz Sänger Aaron Kaufman an der Tour teil. Er war zeitgleich für neun Konzerte nach Leipzig gereist.
Im Rahmen meines Praktikums bei LTM war ich an der Organisation der Tour beteiligt und betreute die deutsch-amerikanische Gruppe. Wir besuchten viele Leipziger Sehenswürdigkeiten, angefangen vom Völkerschlachtdenkmal über das weltgrößte 360°-Panorama im Asisi Panometer bis hin zur am 1.7. eröffneten Tropenerlebniswelt „Gondwanaland“. Weiterhin standen ein Rundgang „Auf den Spuren der Friedlichen Revolution 1989“ sowie eine Führung im BMW-Werk auf dem Programm. Am 4.7., dem Unabhängigkeitstag der Amerikaner, wurde die Gruppe im US-Konsulat empfangen. Natürlich erfüllten wir auch einen besonderen Wunsch der amerikanischen Schüler: Bratwurst essen! Bei entspannter sommerlicher Atmosphäre grillten wir im Johannapark. Auch wenn es leider während der Tour ab und zu heftig regnete, wurden die sonnigen Momente zum Baden an unserem „Cossi“ (Cospudener See) genutzt.
Nicht nur die Texaner lernten in diesen zwei Wochen ausführliche Details über unsere Stadt kennen. Neben Geschichte und Architektur waren die Studenten von der vielfältigen Natur begeistert: „Die Stadt ist so herrlich grün“, erzählte mir Aaron und fügte verträumt hinzu: „Vielleicht komme ich nächstes Jahr zurück, denn hier kann ich mich zum Texte schreiben inspirieren lassen“. Auch Randy, Eric und Jenny fühlten sich nach eigener Aussage in Leipzig pudelwohl und haben die Stadt ins Herz geschlossen.

From June 24 to July 08 a group from our Texan partner city of Houston visited Leipzig.
Houston and Leipzig have been twin cities for 13 years. Thanks to the annual student competition held at a Leipzig school and a school in Houston, this year’s Texan winners got the opportunity to meet their sister city in person during an exciting two-week tourist program.
Jenny, Randy, and Eric were accompanied by the German winners, simultaneously their host families.
The popular U.S. jazz-folk singer Aaron Kaufman was equally part of the tour, during his stay for 9 concerts in the city.
During my internship at the Leipzig Tourist Office, I organized the tickets and accompanied the group, e.g. to the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, the world’s largest 360° panorama “Amazonia” or the tropical world of experience “Gondwanaland” at Leipzig Zoo, which just opened on July 1. Last but not least we took part in a guided tour “On the Traces of the Peaceful Revolution of 1989” at the wonderful Forum of Contemporary History and visited the BMW plant Leipzig. On July 4, Independence Day, there was a reception at the U.S. Consulate.
Not just the Texans learned comprehensive details about our city. In addition to all the history and architecture, the students were enthusiastic about the abundance of nature in the midst of a city: “The city is so green,” Aaron told me and added: “Perhaps I will come back next year. Everything here inspires me to write lyrics.”
Even though it was raining now and then, the sunny days were used to spend the free time at the “Cossi” and to have a barbecue in Johanna Park. One of the most important things Jenny, Randy, Eric and Aaron were introduced to: Bratwurst!
Aaron, Randy, Eric and Jenny felt very comfortable in the city and I am sure that they took in their heart a little Leipzig back home.
